MRI Safety

Your safety, Our concern

Exposure to the strong magnetic environment upon entering the scanner room comes with certain risks related to ferromagnetic materials. Additional hazards may also arise from other equipment or experimental setups used in the MRI environment.

To minimize the safety risk to human research subjects and staff and the risk of damage to the MRI scanner, all investigators and staff involved in MRI studies are required to complete the MRI Safety Training organized by CORE GIfMI. Furthermore, they must undergo a MRI safety screening by the MRI Safety Responsible before being granted badge access to the CORE GIfMI MRI facility. 

Subjects and others who need to enter the scanner room are thoroughly screened for contraindicated risks according to the MRI Safety Standard Operating Procedures by means of a standard written form (PDF).

Initial MRI Safety Training

1. Complete the MRI Safety Training Application Form

  • Complete the MRI Safety Training Application Form.
  • Upon submission of the application, you will receive an email with instructions.
  • The MR Safety responsible will assess the validity of your request and will contact you.

2. Select a date for your MRI Safety Training

  • MRI Safety training sessions are organized on a regular basis, depending on the number of applicants.
  • If your request is approved, navigate to the UGent Event Manager to select one of the next MRI Safety Trainings.
  • The MRI Safety responsible will contact you. Rescheduling is possible depending on the number of applications of a certain date.

3. Complete the MRI Safety Training e-learning

  • It is mandatory to follow and complete the MRI Safety e-learning module in order to participate in the On-Site Demonstration. The link to the video will be provided my the MR Safety responsible.
  • Confirm in the MRI Safety e-learning form you watched the MR Safety e-learning module.

4. Complete the MRI Safety Quiz

  • The MRI Safety responsible will send a link with a MRI Safety Quiz.
  • Complete and submit the quiz.
  • Successful completion is a score of at least 80%.

5. Participate in the On-site demonstration

  • We need to screen you for contraindicated risks according to the MRI Safety Standard Operating Procedures by means of a standard written form (PDF). Fill out the form truthfully on the day of the on-site demonstration and bring it with you. Submit the form to the MR Safety trainer.  
  • Take advantage of the unique opportunity to feel the power of the magnetic field under controlled circumstances.  

Annual MRI Safety Training Renewal

Complete the MRI Safety Training Application Form

  • In order to maintain your status of MRI Safety Trained personnel, completion of an Annual MRI Safety Training Renewal is required..
  • About a year after the initial MRI Safety Training, you will receive an email to renew the training which will be an online quiz.
  • Successful completion of the Renewal Quiz is a score of at least 80%.
